Design for the Main Sanctuary Ark and Stained Glass
October 11, 2009
The dramatic sculptural ark above, incorporates into the previous design, an element which is comprised of a procession of columnar units arranged in breathtaking ascending spiral, which slices through the form, creating a notch The staggered and perpendicular appearance of the spiral is mirrored in the wooden and glass elements which make up the convex, sliding ark doors. The circular opening, above and at the center of the ark, which, in the previous design, framed a stained glass window, now contains an exuberant organically shaped blown-glass Ner Tamid, which illuminates the arched opening as well as the spiraling form behind. Like all sculpture, this form invites the viewer move around the and view the ark from different angles. The stained glass beside the ark provides a simple surround to set off the complex shape of the ark. The stained glass design reiterates the stepped and staggered elements of the ark and incorporates the angles of the mullions. The broken arch recalls Jerusalem as well as alluding to the imperfect nature of a world in need of Tikun Olam.

Above, the design for the ark and stained glass for the main sanctuary is superimposed on the exterior view of the park outside, to give a suggestion of the degree of view to the outside. Blown glass Ner Tamid is featured prominently, in the circular opening. The colors of the stained glass and the glass of the ark doors derive from the colors of the large Ner Tamid, in this case, reds and oranges, and from the materials palette for the sanctuary.
