Design for the Main Sanctuary Ark and Stained Glass
November 12, 2009
The new ark, above, incorporates all the changes we have been discussing and introduces a new element, which is the stepped shape of the face of the ark, adding the sculptural dimension to the form.

The stained glass surrounding the ark is meant to enhance and set off the ark, against the natural background seen through the mostly clear glass, as the singular focal point of the sanctuary. This stained glass design consists of abstract and formal elements, some symbolism, some numerology and even a connection to the theme of Jacob's Ladder. The horizontal movement in the stained glass is reflected in the horizontal configuration of the ark doors. The Hebrew text, from the story of Jacob's dream appears above the ark doors, "God is in this place..." and is superbly appropriate for a sanctuary, especially at Temple Beth El. The free-form, blown glass eternal light measures approximately 24" in diameter and its colors harmonize with the colors of the stained glass and the ark doors. The gradient bars and the slight "glow" created around the ark will be accomplished through a combination of etching on flashed glass and the use of custom blown gradient sheets. Lighting, on the inside of the ark illuminates the glass ark doors and also allows a veiled view of the Torahs.

Another level of depth to the composition can be achieved by the use of a mouth-blown clear glass, for the background. There is a wide variety of "antique" striated clear glass available, for use in stained glass fabrication, which, as an alternate to clear window glass, will create a transcendent quality to the appearance of the artwork and the natural setting beyond.

In this variation, we use alternate colors and focus on the abstract elements of the stained glass design, eliminating the helix.
