Respect for Creation: Kavod Ha'Olam

This installation, for the east wall of the Chapel, incorporates the Aron Hakodesh with sidelight stained glass windows, which are also visible from Recognition Hall. The stained glass composition is on the theme of, "It is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it." In our case, a pomegranate tree with eighteen pomegranates. Each pomegranate shows its seeds. The inscription, in Hebrew, is rendered, in raised metal lettering, on the gently curving soffit, which projects about one foot, from the wall. Two columns which support the soffits, are banded with rings of gold, silver and copper. The gems of the twelve tribes of Israel glow, with the light from within the ark. The ten commandments, in gold leaf, is on the ark doors, which slide open, to reveal the ark interior. Large concentric circles break up the background. The blown glass Ner Tamid mounted on the upper soffit, recalls the main sanctuary Ner Tamid, of similar design and materials.

The large shape, behind the ark represents a maple veneered mass, approximately 4" thick, which conveys the shape, dictated by the architecture. This shape is repeated, throughout the building and is literally, the shape of all three of the current projects This maple panel carries a "notch" at the top, center, symbolizing the incompleteness and imperfectness of creation.

This is the window about man's relationship to the creation, about the "cultivation of the world," about "Tikun Olam," and how we can perceive a reflection of the divine intention in the beauty, harmony and symmetry of the natural world.
