Design for the Main Sanctuary Ark and Stained Glass
November 12, 2009

The rendering of the ark and stained glass for the main sanctuary, above, incorporates the following changes requested by the committee.

1. An enlarged and more dramatic Ner Tamid
2. Changes to the shape of the ark including, removing the ladders, removing the circular opening, softening the angle of the tapers on the sides and widening the base.
3. We changed the mullion configuration from the diagonal motif of the previous design to a more modern configuration with alternating wide and thin mullions in a horizontal, rectangular grid.
4. Addition of the double helix (perhaps, with the names of the Ten Obligations without Measure) in a tight arch surrounding the ark
.
5. The use of a graduated color, in the stained glass, at the edges of the ark, to create a glow, surrounding the ark.
6. We retained the ark door, as it was, in the previous design, and added some blue and gold color to it, to co-ordinate with the other artglass in the composition, including the Ner Tamid.
7. We divided the veneer face of the ark cabinet into a large grid pattern, to reflect the pattern in the mullions and to allow for the seams in the veneer which will be necessary for the fabrication, transportation and installation of the ark.
8. We changed the color of the ark to reflect a palette of walnut and birch as opposed to the cherry and birch proposed previously.

The two main colors in our glass palette, the blue and the gold, are arbitrary, in that any palette could be chosen, however we have e derived these colors, from the image of the Ner Tamid.
