Design for the Main Sanctuary Ark and Stained Glass
July 31, 2009

In the rendering, above, the new ark is shown. The Shema doors are penetrated with glass filled openings, lit from within. Two sculptural ladders are afixed to the ark. These ladders will be made of wood with a ribbon of blown glass weaving in and out. The glass will be lit from within the ark. The design of the window at top center of the ark derives directly from the star at the center of the Chapel window. A blown glass Ner Tamid matches, in color, the glass of the ark doors. the Hebrew inscription above the doors is rendered in raised metal lettering. In the art glass composition, behind the ark, almost all of the glass will be clear, in color, in order to provide for the most unobstructed view of the gardens, outside. We would intend upon using bevels, glass etching and painting, to render the ephemeral "rainbow ladders." The text of the Ten Obligations Without Measure, inscribed, in Hebrew and in English. The Shema is written in 36 different languages in a border surrounding the whole composition.
