Jacob's Ladder: the connection between the earthly and the transcendent.

Two spiraling ladders are inscribed in Hebrew and English with the Ten Obligations Without Measure. These ladders connect the Earthly, in the lower section, represented by color, profusion, diversity, with the Transcendent, above, a plane of clarity, beauty and oneness. Below the earth, there is water and below the water, the random array of Hebrew letters, which stand for tohu v' vohu, the raw materials God used to create everything. Below that, only the clarity of the transcendent. As above, so below.

There is a grid work of colored squares, in the mid ground of the window, whose color derives from the materials palette for the sanctuary and casts an appealing illusion of living greenery, especially when animated by the movement of the actual trees and bushes in the park outside. This grid work of squares represents the kind of pattern that reasoning, thinking humans put onto the earthly world. It's full of color and life and sensuality, while being linear, two-dimensional and orderly. Overlaying the colored squares is a pattern of white, etched lines, which, in reality, is a maze, an appropriate symbol for each individual's personal journey on the earthly plane. It's filled with twists and turns and choices one needs to make and there are blind alleys, where one has to retrace one's steps.

The transcendent space is the crystalline clear space that allows the viewer to see through to the real world. It is divided only by the array of intersecting circles, whose whole pattern is truly unknowable to us. The stars, in the sky are arranged to spell the word Echad.

Floral Design Alternative for the Main Sanctuary

The Earthly plane is filled with the Seven Species of fruits, mentioned in the Torah and symbolic of Israel. It is a Garden of abundance. There are even bugs and butterflies. The Shechina is there. There is a rock, engraved with the word El, and, what looks like someone's sleepy head is resting on it. The plant roots reach deep into the ground where there are things buried, rocks, shells and fossils. The knife that was hanging over Jacob's head is buried there and so is the blessing he had stolen from his brother, Esau.

We have here adapted the ark configuration which we presented for the Chapel to the Main Sanctuary. The main features are: a pair of sliding stained glass ark doors of abstract design and color; An Inscription from the story of Jacob's Dream, God is in this Place..., rendered in raised metal lettering; A free form blown glass Ner Tamid, in colors to co-ordinate with the other glasswor; a pair of columns, decorated with bands of color, symbolizing the twelve tribes. The cherry wood cabinet, decorated with marquetry designs of the Seven Species;when view from above, resembles a pair of wings, providing a small private space, behind the ark.
